Tēnā koutou and welcome to the NZ Apples and Pears online assessment service on Learning Engine.

This service provides access to online assessments for member organisation training managers and employees for the following assessment sets.

Orchard QC Assessment Icon

Orchard QC

This assessment set is designed to assist development of orchard staff competency and knowledge for best practice orchard management. The tests within will test competency in different aspects of Integrated Fruit Production including Trap surveying; Pest monitoring and control; Disease monitoring and control. Successful completion of some assessments will likely fulfil the requirements for demonstrating competency for Official Assurance Programs (OAP): Codling Moth OAP and Apples to Australia OAP.

Fruit Inspector Assessment Icon

Fruit Inspector

This assessment set is designed to prepare packhouse staff for pest identification at different skill levels. MPI refers to the different levels as ‘the levels of your assessed ability’. The programme consists of tests for different levels of skills: A basic pest identification skill level, testing for identification of pest groups; Advanced pest identification levels, testing for pest species identification.

New: The ability to complete the Fruit Inspector: Coolstore Rot assessment as a standalone assessment.

Available: December - November

Phytosanitary Badge

Sanitary and Phytosanitary programme

This programme is designed for packhouse staff that undertake phytosanitary activities on behalf of MPI. This programme needs to be completed in full every five years, with the refresher programme done annually.

Full Programme: Introduction to New Zealand Phytosanitary; Introduction to Phytosanitary; Sanitary and Phytosanitary for Apples and Pears; Pest and Disease Identification; Go Hort Food Safety; Fruit Inspector; Annual Update.

Refresher: Sanitary and Phytosanitary for Apples and Pears; Pest and Disease Identification; Fruit Inspector; Annual Update.

Available: December - April

General Badge

General Assessments

These assessments are designed as stand alone assessments for both packhouse or orchard staff. They include the following assessments:

Annual Update (15 Jan - 30 April) : This annual update will provide information regarding any changes to the OAP and USDA markets for the coming season. It also covers the 2024/25 Taiwan OAP requirements.

Food Safety Testing for Apples and Pears (1 Dec - 30 April): This course will cover how to test, frequency, type of testing and how to interpret tests.

Residue Sampling Competency Test (1 Dec - 31 Aug): This course covers the importance of residue testing and how to correctly collect fruit for residue sampling.


How to access assessments:

Employees: To sign in and complete an assessment you must be invited to enrol by your Orchard/Packhouse Training Manager. If you have not received an invitation email, check your spam/junk folder before contacting your manager. 

Once you have completed an assessment, you will automatically be able to re-certify the following season using the same login details unless your manager chooses to make changes to your training and assessment plan.

Orchard/Packhouse Training Managers: Registered managers can complete assessments and invite other staff to complete them for the first time. 

Staff will be automatically reminded to re-certify each season. Prior to each season commencing, managers will be able to change their employee training and assessment plans.

Food safety 2024/29

New Zealand's reputation depends on producing and selling fruit that customers can trust. In this course, you will become familiar with food safety practices and principles within the horticulture industry. You'll learn how to ensure our fruit is safe to eat.

Annual Update 2024/25

This annual update will provide information regarding any changes to the OAP and USDA markets for the coming season. It also covers the 2024/25 Taiwan OAP requirements to ensure staff complete the NZAPI coordinated pre-season activity.

Course details include:

  • Re-certify: Annually, available January-April

Food Safety Testing for Apples and Pears

This module will introduce you to the basics of food safety testing in the packhouse. It will cover how to test, frequency, type of testing and how to interpret tests.

  • Re-certify: Annually, available December-April

Residue Sampling Competency Test

Sample collection training and competency is a requirement under GlobalGAP's Residue Monitoring Systems criteria. This assessment is designed for packhouse staff who collect fruit for residue for NZAPI's Random Residue Programme to demonstrate competency in residue sampling.

Course details include:

  • Duration: 15 minutes
  • Recognition: Residue Sampling Competency Test Badge
  • Re-certify: Annually, available December-August
